Right through the last season, the Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, kept on saying in his interviews that his side was not the strongest contender to win the league title. He tipped Manchester City for being the Champions and that’s what exactly happened.
The Blues themselves were not that bad though. They finished at the third position in the table.
The 2013-14 Season was actually the start of Mourinho’s second tenure at Stamford Bridge. So, the Chelsea board, which is known for reacting too quickly, remained patient. But, that is unlikely to happen during the upcoming season and Mourinho must be aware of that.
The Portuguese manager has been brought to West London by the Chelsea owners not to make the team finish third or fourth in the table. He has been given the charge to make the team win trophies again.
Mourinho had done that quite successfully during his first tenure. He had turned Chelsea into a champion side after taking charge in 2004 and he is expected to do that again.
In one of his interviews about a month back, Mourinho had said that this summer, the Blues’ squad would be stronger than what it was during the previous season, but, he also said that he had no idea whether his team would end up at no. 1 or no. 6.
So, it’s clear that he is trying not to take any sort of pressure on himself again, but, he must know that this is the season for him to deliver. Any failure from here on would not go well with the owners.
The Blues’ first two league matches in the next season will be against the new boys Burnley and Leicester City on 16th and 23rd of August respectively. They would look to win both those games and start on a great note.
