Chelsea manager José Mourinho has claimed that he is proud of his team after they managed an improbable comeback in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Chelsea were trailing PSG 3-1 on aggregate from the first leg.
The late goal from Pastore in the first leg looked to have changed the whole dynamic of the tie because Chelsea needed two goals in the second leg in order to go through. However, they achieved this by the way of some never say die attitude, which has already been seen at Stamford Bridge in 2012.
After the match, Mourinho was in full praise of the players and he said that they gave their everything. Andre Schurrle got the first of the two goals needed to go through much earlier in the match. He had come on as a substitute for Eden Hazard. However, the much-needed second goal was proving to be elusive. Mourinho tried everything in the match and even had three strikers playing up front at one point in the encounter. Such attacking attitude paid rich dividends, as Chelsea got the crucial second goal through Demba Ba with just three minutes remaining.
This also meant that PSG do not have time to come back and get the goal, which would have sent them through on away goals rule. Chelsea have now made it into their seventh semi-final in 11 years.
"They gave everything. Even in some difficult moments of the performance, they gave absolutely everything. I promise you, to play against Lucas is not easy, to play against Cavani is not easy, to play against Lavezzi is not easy. My four defenders, as always, were brilliant but the midfield worked like animals and David Luiz was a monster. We risked everything,” said Mourinho, whose team are looking unlikely to win the Premier league this season.
